This is a wonderful example of a traditional silver necklace with crucifix (chachal) worn by the indigenous in the Highlands of Guatemala. Influenced by the Spanish during the Colonial period, these types of necklaces started with their arrival in 1524, have evolved over the centuries, and are still worn today. In Spain, crucifixes with moving pieces hanging from the arms of the cross were very important and popular. They were usually blessed by a priest to make them more powerful against evil. (more…)
